What do federations get from digital credentials?

How many people hold sports credentials, and why does checking them matter?
Club sport runs on a very large volunteer and coaching workforce, and much of it works with children. Research across six European countries found that violence against children in sport is common, which is why safeguarding training became mandatory in many federations and why proof that a specific person completed it has to be checkable.

Why do laminated coaching cards fail?
They get lost, they can be copied on a home printer, they say nothing about whether the qualification is still valid, and nobody can check one without calling the federation. A card proves that a card exists.
A laminated card was a fine solution in 1995. In 2026, it's a problem.

Digital credentials don't. They live in the recipient's email, on their LinkedIn profile, and on a shareable link. The verification URL is permanent.
Cards can be forged

How do you prove a safeguarding certificate is still valid?
By putting the validity period on the credential itself and letting anyone check it. Safeguarding, anti-doping and first aid credentials expire, and an expired one that still looks convincing is the specific failure this closes.
