Blockchain credentials for government & public sector
Public sector credentials have to outlive the systems that issued them. Why does government need blockchain credentials?
Because a public record has to stay checkable long after the office, the database and the file format that produced it have changed. A licence issued in 2026 may be presented in 2056, and a citizen presenting it should not depend on an agency still running the same system. Writing a cryptographic fingerprint of the document to a public chain moves the proof outside any single institution.

Blockchain records are held across thousands of independent computers. A credential issued today remains verifiable in 10, 20 or 50 years, whatever happens to any one system.
Fixed at issue

What is the EU rule that makes this urgent?
The European Digital Identity Regulation, in force since 20 May 2024, requires every member state to offer citizens and residents an EU Digital Identity Wallet by December 2026. The wallet is designed to hold electronic attestations of attributes: identity documents, diplomas, professional qualifications and licences. Agencies that already issue credentials as structured, verifiable digital documents have far less work to do when that deadline lands.

- Credentials are already in scope. Diplomas and professional qualifications are named among the attestations the wallet is built to carry, which puts issuing authorities rather than wallet vendors on the critical path.
None of that requires an agency to adopt a wallet today. It does mean that documents issued as flat PDFs will need reissuing, and documents issued as verifiable digital credentials will not.

Which government bodies already use TRUE?
Two Swedish public bodies have issued blockchain secured documents with TRUE: Bolagsverket, the national Companies Registration Office, and Södertälje Kommun. Both went through the security and procurement review a public buyer applies before letting a supplier near official documents.
Bolagsverket, national agency
The Swedish Companies Registration Office is responsible for business registrations. When it looked at blockchain for official documents, it ran the project with TRUE.
The project is evidence that TRUE clears the security, compliance and operational bar a national agency sets.
Södertälje Kommun, municipality
The municipality issued blockchain secured diplomas for its civic hackathon programme, putting verifiable credentials in a municipal setting rather than a pilot lab.
